After he announced that he was suffering from Alzheimer's in 2007, Pratchett made a large donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust and filmed a BBC programme about his experiences with the illness. His final book, a new Discworld novel, was completed last year.
"The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds," said Transworld Publishers' Larry Finlay.
